Cave Story was released in 2004 for the PC and was designed as a homage to classic games from the past such as Metroid, Castlevania, and many other classic games. Cave Story revolutionized indie gaming in many ways, by showing that the old styled games are still popular and bring back memories in gamers, and it showed the western indie game scene that with enough vision, skill, and passion, a single indie developer can still make an deep, amazing action game. The making of Cave Story revolutionized indie gaming, forever. It is a side scrolling platform RPG that takes place within the interior of a floating island, which is made up of several caves. The game focuses on a silent protagonist who awakens within these caves, unsure of where he is. The player character is a robot, and awakens with no memory of how he arrived there. Cave Story has simple controls, allowing basic movement, jumping, and shooting. There is a heads-up display in the top left that displays which weapon is equipped, the weapon level, and current health. After it’s initial release, Cave Story gained popularity as an indie game. It received amazing feedback for its great story and game play.
